The Alumnus of the Year Award is presented to an alumnus or alumna who has displayed an extraordinary commitment to professional achievement, to civic responsibility, to high personal standards, and to Western New England University with a spirit of knowledge, integrity, and service. The Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated a commitment to Western New England University and its mission in conjunction with contribution and service to society or accomplishment and leadership in his or her profession.

    Colleen Loveless '84/G'93 and James Tierney '08

    Colleen Loveless '84/G'93, president of Revitalize Community Development Corporation in Springfield, was presented with the Alumna of the Year award at the President’s Society Reception. James Tierney '08, a lecturer of Economics at Pennsylvania State University, received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award at an October 16 ceremony that also honored the Alumni Association Skookum Award of Excellence winners.

    John Brennan '71 and Ashley Skeete '10/G'12

    Trustee John Brennan '71, a successful entrepreneur who has given back extensively to his alma mater in both talent and treasure, was presented with the Alumnus of the Year award at the President’s Society Reception on September 29, 2015. Ashley Skeete '10/G'12, after distinguishing herself both in the University community and in the aerospace industry, received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award at a September 20, 2015 ceremony.

    Col. Timothy Alben G'01 and Ryan Turner '08

    Massachusetts State Police Superintendent and Colonel Timothy Alben G’01 (left), praised for playing a pivotal role in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation that resulted in the apprehension of suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was presented with the Alumnus of the Year award at the President’s Reception on September 23, 2014. Ryan Turner ’08, who completed his PhD work in neuroscience at West Virginia University and is working on his MD at the same school, received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement award on September 21, 2014.

    Bonnie Malley '83 and Matt Caron '10

    Bonnie Malley '83, executive vice president and chief financial officer at The Phoenix Companies in Hartford, was presented with the Alumna of the Year award at the President’s Reception on September 24, 2013. WWLP TV 22 anchor/reporter Matt Caron '10 received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award on October 20, 2013.

    Nick Fyntrilakis G'04

    On June 1, 2011, a tornado ripped through Springfield and not only wrecked homes, schools, businesses, and trees. It also stalled the momentum of a city that was slowly recovering from state receivership and the recent recession. Nearly a year later, Nick Fyntrilakis G'04 received the Alumnus of the Year Award for his efforts to get the city back on track, assisting Springfield residents who were impacted by this disaster. He is pictured the center with President Anthony S. Caprio and 2010 Alumnus of the Year George Burtch '91.

    George Burtch ’91

    Alumnus of the Year recipient George Burtch '91 has worked for Hasbro for 38 years in various positions in operations and marketing. For the past seven years he has served as the vice president of global integration, leading a team that works with Hasbro’s global markets to assist in the growth of the company’s game business. He is pictured in the middle with Alumni Association President Mike Coffey G'79 and Chair and Associate Professor of Management Jeanie Forray.
