The Mark Coffey Memorial Golf Outing: April 26, 2013

The Annual Mark Coffey Memorial Golf Outing April 26 at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, MA, raised almost $13,000 for the Mark A. Coffey Endowed Memorial Scholarship. The winning foursome with a score of 54 conisted of Andy Montagna, University Trustee Bill Dupuis '79, Glenn Welch '84, and Mike Ryan. The winning mixed foursome with a score of 68 was Alumni Association President Mike Coffey G'79, Jim Conlon, Sue Coffey, and Carol Conlon. Mark Coffey, who died in 2002, served as chair of the Department of Accounting and as a professor of accounting. Also known as “Skip,” he taught at the Western New England for 28 years.

Bowling Alumni Reunion: April 20, 2013

The Fifth Annual Coach Burns Scholarship/Bowling Alumni Tournament on April 20 at Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow, MA, drew 16-plus participants. In the singles category, Scott Davis '76 was the winner with the score of 700. In "baker doubles" action, tournament organizer Tony Mancini '95/G'02 and Jason Williams '02 won it with 688. The bowlers, who raised $1,600 for the scholarship, went to Fazio's Ristorante & Pizzeria in East Longmeadow with their families following the tournament.

Engineering Alumni Dinner: April 13, 2013

On April 13, College of Engineering Alumni gathered at Rivers Memorial Hall for a Networking Dinner with professors, administrators, and students. Speaking at the event were Assistant Dean Richard Grabiec, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Mary Vollaro ’83, Kate Gihon ’11, 2009 Alumnus of the Year Stan Kowalski III ’92, Brittany Pickering ’11, and Director of Alumni Relations Kathy Pappas G’98. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 5K Walk/Run and High Heel Walk: April 13, 2013

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 5K Walk/Run and High Heel Walk on April 13 included a High Heel Walk sponsored by the campus sexual assault awareness group One in Four, along with a 5K walk/run sponsored by the Alumni Association as a community service program. There was also a BBQ cookout after the events. Proceeds from registration went to the YWCA of Western Massachusetts, which provides services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. 2013 Baseball Alumni Reunion

On April 12 former baseball Golden Bears gathered with Coach Matt Labranche for an alumni social at Mama Iguana’s in Springfield. The following day they enjoyed a BBQ cookout hosted by parents of the current players and watched the varsity team take a doubleheader from Wentworth Institute of Technology, 7-3, and 10-0, at George E. Trelease Memorial Park. The second day of the reunion marked Play for a Cause day for the varsity Golden Bears. The squad teamed up with the ALS Association of Massachusetts to enhance its One Dollar Difference event to raise awareness and money to help fight Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Softball Alumni Day: April 6, 2013

Twenty-three reunioners from the Classes of 2002-2012 got together to play an exhibition game and then enjoyed a reception at Case de Nana restaurant on Boston Road. The former Golden Bear softball players also watched the varsity team play Salve Regina University Seahawks.

Hartford Alumni Reception: April 4, 2013

Connecticut capital region alumni met at Agave Grill in Hartford on April 4 for the Hartford Alumni Reception. It was a unique opportunity to reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones—along with some new professional contacts. Guests included College of Business Dean Julie Siciliano ’81/G’84, Associate Dean Marilyn Pelosi, College of Arts of Sciences Dean Saeed Ghahramani, and College of Engineering Dean H. Hossein Cheraghi.

2013 Golden Bear Dinner, Orlando, FL

On March 18, alumni and friends joined President Anthony S. Caprio, Director of Athletics Mike Theulen, and host Richard Arrich ’73, president of A & A Aloe in Ormond Beach, FL, for a buffet dinner with the University’s student-athletes and coaches in Celebration, FL. The guests, which included University employees and parents of students, came to support the Golden Bear baseball, softball, women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s tennis teams as they played during spring break in Florida. The event took place at the Mystic Dunes Resort & Golf Club. Also pictured are Golden Bear teams in action.

Flat Golden Bear Photo Contest

Flat Golden Bear has been making the rounds, from going on the Alternative Spring Break student trips to Virginia and New York to watching University athletics teams playing in Orlando, FL, to enjoying a vacation in Bermuda. Those who submitted to best three photos in the Flat Golden Bear Photo Contest, which ended April 30, will receive four tickets to a varsity athletics contest of their choice at Western New England University and Alumni Association merchandise.

Alumni Coach and Mentor Students at RealTest

On March 8 senior management students had the opportunity to network with alumni and receive guidance during RealTest, which was organized by the Department of Management and the College of Business with support from the Office of Alumni Relations. Students participated in a variety of business-related activities, including a team presentation on how they would handle a business situation based on one of three case studies. The alumni served as coaches and mentors for participating students.

Alumni Day at the Falcons: February 17, 2013

Alumni, staff, faculty, students, family and friends gathered to watch the Springfield Falcons play the Adirondack Phantoms. Anthony S. Caprio kicked off the festivities with the traditional puck drop, and the ROTC Color Guard presented the U.S. flag for the National Anthem, which was sung by the Western New England University Choral Group. The afternoon began with a pre-game reception (Falcons Fever T-shirts were given to all reception attendees), and photo opportunities with the Golden Bear and Screech mascots. Basketball Alumni Day: February 2, 2013

A dozen women's basketball alumnae and 15 former members of the men's team gathered on February 2 for alumni games, meals with fellow alumni, and varsity men's and women's Golden Bear basketball games vs. Endicott. Most "vintage" alumni returning: Sharon Gould '86 for the women, and Peter Harris '79 represented the '70s for the men. Read more alumni news.

Snow Blankets the Campus on January 16, 2013

The snow from the December 27, 2012 storm had all but melted when three inches of the white stuff covered the area on January 16 in the first accumulating snowfall of the new year.

Hockey Alumni Day: December 1, 2012

On December 1 hockey alumni and friends got together with varsity coach Greg Heffernan for a team dinner at the St. Germain Campus Center and then enjoyed a scrimmage at Smead Arena in Springfield. This was followed by reunion participants watching the varsity hockey Golden Bears play Johnson and Wales University.

Plan for Success Career Strategies Seminar: October 24, 2012

The Plan for Success Career Strategies Seminar for alumni on October 24 was sponsored by the Alumni Association. Workshops offered were Resume Review, Networking Strategies, Interviews and Application Guidelines, Effectively Utilizing Employment Recruiters, and Entrepreneurial Workshop. Attendees at this event learned how to stand out in a crowded job market and position themselves for promotions.

The Skookum Award was established in 1989 by the Alumni Association. This year’s 15 award recipients come from diverse backgrounds and were nominated by faculty, staff, and coaches.

Skookum Award of Excellence Dinner: October 12, 2012

The annual Skookum Award Dinner at Rivers Memorial Hall on October 12 kicked off Family and Friends Weekend. The word “Skookum” in the Chinook language means “excellence,” and awards were presented to 15 students who have demonstrated excellence in academics, cocurricular activities, athletics, volunteer work, and community service.

Cross Country Alumni Day, October 13, 2012

The Cross Country Alumni Day drew 25 alumni and family members from as far back as the 1980s. Alumni also competed in the Western New England Golden Bears Invitational and enjoyed lunch. There were 204 competitors in the men's tournament and 212 runners in the women's event.
