President's Alumni Reception in Boston: February 26, 2015

The host for the President's Alumni Reception in Boston on February 26 was Roger Wade L'82. The event took place at The Ritz-Carlton, Boston Common. Guests included College of Engineering Dean S. Hossein Cheraghi, School of Law Dean Eric Gouvin, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Saeed Ghahramani, College of Pharmacy Dean Evan Robinson, and College of Business Dean Julie Siciliano '81/G'84.

Biggest Loser Finale Party: January 29, 2015

The University community wore green for Team Rob Guiry ’10/G’14 at The Biggest Loser Finale Party at Rivers Memorial Hall on January 29. There were healthy snacks, raffles, and giveaways, and the Healthy Living Fair prior to the 8:00 p.m. TV viewing included nutrition information and yoga. Rob didn't win, but he weighed in at 245 pounds after losing 238 pounds.

Ice Hockey Reunion: January 10, 2015

At the MassMutual Center in Springfield on January 10, 16 ice hockey alumni played against the varsity Golden Bear seniors. Alumni, who went as far back as the Class of 2003 and came from as far away as New Jersey, also supported this year's team with donations. After the game, the alumni cheered the Patriots onto a playoff victory at Theodore's in Springfield.

Cross Country Alumni Day: October 18, 2014

The Cross Country Reunion on October 18 brought 30 alumni to campus, 22 of whom ran in the WNE Invitational 8K. The reunioners included Gary Crowley '84, who was inducted into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame on September 12. Mark Ruddock '82 was the most vintage Golden Bear at the gathering, which also included several children of alumni runners.

Washington, DC Alumni Reception: October 16, 2014

Alumni from the Washington, DC area met at the Dupont Circle Hotel on October 16. It was a unique opportunity to reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones—along with some new professional contacts. The event was hosted by Scott Lessne L’83.

Engineering Mentoring Dinner: October 9, 2014

Sponsored by the Alumni Association, the 14th annual Engineering Mentoring Program’s Kick-off Dinner on October 9 afforded 180 first-year students a chance to network with 32 alumni mentors and ask questions about what to expect in their studies over the next four years and the various engineering careers available to them afterward.

Outstanding Young Alumni and Skookum Award Brunch: September 21, 2014

The Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement and Skookum Award Brunch took place at Rivers Memorial Hall on September 21. The word “Skookum” in the Chinook language means “excellence,” and awards were presented to 15 students who have demonstrated this quality in academics, cocurricular activities, athletics, volunteer work, and community service. Ryan Turner ’08, who completed his PhD work in neuroscience at West Virginia University and is working on his MD at the same school, received the Young Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award.

The 2014 Skookum Awards: Portraits and Biographies

The Skookum Award was established in 1989 by the Alumni Association. This year’s 15 award recipients come from diverse backgrounds and were nominated by faculty, staff, and coaches.

College of Engineering Class of 1964 50th Reunion: September 25-27, 2014

The College of Engineering Class of 1964 recaptured the Blue and Gold Spirit September 25-27 with reunion events, which began with cocktails and dinner Thursday night. On Friday, 12 members celebrated their half-century of being alumni with a reception, lunch, descriptions of their personal histories, a tour of Sleith Hall, and presentations of current research by Chair and Professor of Mechanical Engineering Said Dini, Chair and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Neeraj Magotra, and Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Anthony English. At Western New England University, Homecoming on September 13 was a great day for catching up with old friends—and catching some comedy from the University’s Improv on the Rocks troupe, as well as enjoying victories by the football team, as well as the men's and women's soccer teams. Alumni Family Day at Southwick's Zoo: June 28, 2014

More than 40 alumni, families, and friends enjoyed a day at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, MA. Particpants enjoyed lunch, rides, and animals, including Bengal tiger sisters Kya and Taj and white rhinos Thelma and Louise.

Flat Golden Bear has undergone a makeover! Download your Flat Golden Bear—either the full-color cartoon figureor one your child can color—and print it out. Going on a trip? A sporting event? Another kind of adventure? Bring the new version of Flat Golden Bear along, snap a few pictures of him with you and your family, and email them to Please identify the people in the photo. Check out photos of Flat Golden Bear's voyages. The winner will receive four tickets to a varsity athletics contest of your choice at Western New England University and a package of Alumni Association apparel. WNEU Golden Bear Alumni Tough Mudder Team: May 31, 2014

Mud happens: the 2014 WNEU Golden Bear Alumni Tough Mudder Team consisted of Sarah Kelly, strength training coordinator /wellness coordinator/athletic trainer; Assistant Baseball Caoch Chris Wiltey G'12; and Matt Anthonis '13. The alumni Mudders took on a 10-plus mile course, complete with military style obstacles, on May 31 at Mount Snow in West Dover, VT. The event raised funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.
