Homecoming 2015, Photo Album 1: Golden Graduates

Despite the rain, Homecoming on October 4 turned out to be an event not to miss. It was a great day to reconnect with old friends, as well as catching performances from the Cheerleading Team, Dance Team, and Improv on the rocks—these were some of the festivities that were moved to the Alumni Healthful Living Center because of the weather. Fans also witnessed victories by the football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s tennis teams. Homecoming Weekend featured a Open House events at the University’s academics buildings, a comedy performance by Matthew Broussard, children’s activities, tours of campus, horse-drawn wagon rides, food trucks, and various reunions, including women’s lacrosse, women’s basketball, women’s swimming—along with a celebration of the 40th and 50th men’s soccer. The Flynn Family Golden Bear Pavilion Dedication: September 29, 2015

Western New England University dedicated the new Flynn Family Golden Bear Pavilion on September 29 before an enthusiastic crowd of student-athletes, faculty, staff, and friends. The Flynn Family and University trustee Michael J. Flynn '82/G'83, owners of Hampden Engineering in East Longmeadow, MA, are longtime supporters of the University and its Athletics program. The Pavilion features state-of-the-art lockers for eight of the Golden Bears outdoor sports teams: baseball, field hockey, football, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, and softball. The $1.5-million facility also features equipment and training rooms, public restrooms, and a concession stand.

Engineering Class of 1965 Day Division 50th Reunion

Alumni from the College of Engineering Class of 1965 Day Division reunited on September 20 for a welcoming dinner at Max's Tavern in Springfield, and then came back to the University the following day with coffee at Sleith Hall, tours of the building, and a demonstration of the College's Mini Baja off-road vehicle. The car was designed and built by the College of Engineering’s Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Team and finished 18th out of 110 college entries in a motocross track endurance race last May in Mechanicsville, MD.

The 47th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament

Alumni golfers at the 47th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament on May 22, 2015, started their Memorial Day weekend early and took advantage of the sunny skies and the opportunity to get together with fellow alumni and family at the Ludlow Country Club in Ludlow, MA. The event raised more than $16,000 for the Alumni Association Golf Tournament Endowed Scholarship. The winning group of golfers, with a score of 59, was Joe Stevens ’81, Jim Dowd ’84, John Kelly, and Christian Marques ’82. Read the entire story. View the video.

The 7th Annual Coach Burns Scholarship/Bowling Alumni Tournament: April 18, 2015

At Shaker Bowl in East Longmeadow, MA on April 18, more than $1,800 was raised was raised for the Coach Burns Scholarship. Winning at doubles were Jason Williams '02 (a three-time defending champion with different partners each year) and Beau Highfill '99 with a score of 709. Winning at singles was Gary LoPresto '94 with a score of 729.

Golden Bear Pavilion Construction

The Golden Bear Pavilion, the latest addition to our outdoor sports complex, will include facilities for a training room, locker rooms, and an equipment room. Spectators will gain the convenience of a concession stand and public restrooms to make game day more enjoyable. Read more about this project.

Warmth, excitement, and enthusiasm filled the air as President Anthony S. Caprio briefed guests on the latest news from the University at the President’s Alumni Reception in Hartford, CT on March 5. Trustee Amy B. Lewis ’88/G’00 hosted the event at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, Autorino Great Hall.

President's Alumni Reception in Boston: February 26, 2015

The host for the President's Alumni Reception in Boston on February 26 was Roger Wade L'82. The event took place at The Ritz-Carlton, Boston Common. Guests included College of Engineering Dean S. Hossein Cheraghi, School of Law Dean Eric Gouvin, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Saeed Ghahramani, College of Pharmacy Dean Evan Robinson, and College of Business Dean Julie Siciliano '81/G'84.

Biggest Loser Finale Party: January 29, 2015

The University community wore green for Team Rob Guiry ’10/G’14 at The Biggest Loser Finale Party at Rivers Memorial Hall on January 29. There were healthy snacks, raffles, and giveaways, and the Healthy Living Fair prior to the 8:00 p.m. TV viewing included nutrition information and yoga. Rob didn't win, but he weighed in at 245 pounds after losing 238 pounds.

Ice Hockey Reunion: January 10, 2015

At the MassMutual Center in Springfield on January 10, 16 ice hockey alumni played against the varsity Golden Bear seniors. Alumni, who went as far back as the Class of 2003 and came from as far away as New Jersey, also supported this year's team with donations. After the game, the alumni cheered the Patriots onto a playoff victory at Theodore's in Springfield.

Cross Country Alumni Day: October 18, 2014

The Cross Country Reunion on October 18 brought 30 alumni to campus, 22 of whom ran in the WNE Invitational 8K. The reunioners included Gary Crowley '84, who was inducted into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame on September 12. Mark Ruddock '82 was the most vintage Golden Bear at the gathering, which also included several children of alumni runners.

Washington, DC Alumni Reception: October 16, 2014

Alumni from the Washington, DC area met at the Dupont Circle Hotel on October 16. It was a unique opportunity to reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones—along with some new professional contacts. The event was hosted by Scott Lessne L’83.

Engineering Mentoring Dinner: October 9, 2014

Sponsored by the Alumni Association, the 14th annual Engineering Mentoring Program’s Kick-off Dinner on October 9 afforded 180 first-year students a chance to network with 32 alumni mentors and ask questions about what to expect in their studies over the next four years and the various engineering careers available to them afterward.
