College of Engineering Class of 1964 50th Reunion: September 25-27, 2014

The College of Engineering Class of 1964 recaptured the Blue and Gold Spirit September 25-27 with reunion events, which began with cocktails and dinner Thursday night. On Friday, 12 members celebrated their half-century of being alumni with a reception, lunch, descriptions of their personal histories, a tour of Sleith Hall, and presentations of current research by Chair and Professor of Mechanical Engineering Said Dini, Chair and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Neeraj Magotra, and Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Anthony English. Homecoming 2014, Photo Album 1: Golden Graduates

At Western New England University, Homecoming on September 13 was a great day for catching up with old friends—and catching some comedy from the University’s Improv on the Rocks troupe, as well as enjoying victories by the football team, as well as the men's and women's soccer teams. Alumni Family Day at Southwick's Zoo: June 28, 2014

More than 40 alumni, families, and friends enjoyed a day at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, MA. Particpants enjoyed lunch, rides, and animals, including Bengal tiger sisters Kya and Taj and white rhinos Thelma and Louise.

Sleith 100 Renovation: June 2014

Flat Golden Bear has undergone a makeover! Download your Flat Golden Bear—either the full-color cartoon figureor one your child can color—and print it out. Going on a trip? A sporting event? Another kind of adventure? Bring the new version of Flat Golden Bear along, snap a few pictures of him with you and your family, and email them to Please identify the people in the photo. Check out photos of Flat Golden Bear's voyages. The winner will receive four tickets to a varsity athletics contest of your choice at Western New England University and a package of Alumni Association apparel. WNEU Golden Bear Alumni Tough Mudder Team: May 31, 2014

Mud happens: the 2014 WNEU Golden Bear Alumni Tough Mudder Team consisted of Sarah Kelly, strength training coordinator /wellness coordinator/athletic trainer; Assistant Baseball Caoch Chris Wiltey G'12; and Matt Anthonis '13. The alumni Mudders took on a 10-plus mile course, complete with military style obstacles, on May 31 at Mount Snow in West Dover, VT. The event raised funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.

2014 Alumni Golf Tournament

Alumni golfers at the 46th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament on May 23 started their Memorial Day weekend early and took advantage of the opportunity to get together with fellow alumni and family at the Ludlow Country Club in Ludlow, MA. The event raised more than $17,000 for the Alumni Association Golf Tournament Endowed Scholarship. The winning group of golfers, with a score of 56, consisted of Jason Grondin '03, Paul Nunez, Billy Cotti, and Ken MacFayden.

Undergraduate and Doctoral Commencement 2014

Victoria Reggie Kennedy, the president of the board and co-founder of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston, delivered the Commencement address on May 17 at the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The institute is named for her late husband and U.S. senator. The undergraduate students represent 16 different states as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands. Army ROTC Spring Commissioning: May 16, 2014

Commissioned as second lieutenants during an Army ROTC ceremony on May 16 in Rivers Memorial Hall were four cadets of the Minuteman Battallion: Western New England University students Stephanie Mulcahy, Griffin King, and Jefferson Sherman; and Westfield State University student Hannah Shea.

Rain Fails to Dampen the Spirits of University Volunteers at Housing Revitalization Project

Despite the rain and cold, nearly 1,000 volunteers—including Western New England University alumni, students, and employees—turned out for a massive renovation and beautification effort in Springfield’s Old Hill neighborhood on April 26. On April 26, alumni ruggers enjoyed an awards luncheon in Dining Room B, an alumni match at Van Horn Park in Springfield, followed by a buffet dinner at Peppa's. The events were organized by Robert Guiry '10.

Three Alumni Lauded as "Difference Makers" In the Community by BusinessWest Magazine

BusinessWest magazine honored its 2014 Difference Makers at a gala celebration dinner on March 20 at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA. Three of the five honorees this year are alumni of Western New England University: Colleen Loveless ’84/G’93, executive director of the Springfield Chapter of Rebuilding Together; Paula Moore ’95, a teacher of English and special education at Springfield’s Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy and founder of Youth Social Educational Training; and Michael Moriarty L’93, an attorney and president of Olde Holyoke Development Corp. Read the story.

Baseball Alumni Day: April 12, 2014

On April 12, baseball alumni reunited at the varsity baseball doubleheader vs. Curry for a cookout hosted by parents of the current players. They saw the Golden Bears emerge victorious, 4-3 and 2-1. Following the games they attended a social at Samuel's in Springfield.

Alumni from the Boston area met at Dillon's in the Back Bay for an Alumni Networking Social on April 10, 2014. It was a unique opportunity to reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones—along with some new professional contacts. Guests included College of Arts of Sciences Dean Saeed Ghahramani.
