Our Services

Our group conducts applied research on the best ways to assess and treat children’s challenging behavior. Participating families receive free assessment and treatment services until the child’s individual behavior goals have been met. Typically, the child and at least one parent/caregiver attends two to three 1-hr sessions per week at our clinic on the campus of Western New England University.

We currently have openings for participants in two projects. Please click the links below for more information about each.

Selective Eating

Is your child a picky eater? Do your child's eating habits cause nutritional concerns and/or mealtime stress?

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) at the Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University may be able to help you. They are actively conducting child-centered research guided by these aims:

  • To better understand the reasons for each child’s overly selective eating
  • To evaluate the effects of a personalized and progressive treatment program designed to increase the variety of foods children eat

If your child: 

  • is between 3 and 10 years old
  • eats only certain foods, causing concern about proper nutrition or causing mealtime stress for caregivers
  • consumes all of his/her calories by mouth  

And if you are willing to participate in child-centered research that evaluates the effects of a personalized and progressive treatment program, we invite you to contact our team of BCBAs led by Dr. Gregory Hanley, Ph.D., BCBA-D, LBA to obtain more information. 

Parent Training—Autism

Has your child recently been diagnosed with autism? Would you like to learn how to help your child develop skills to prevent problem behavior?

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) at the Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University may be able to help you. They are actively conducting home-based, family-centered research guided by these aims:

  • To better understand how to coach parents to teach communication, play, and social skills
  • To evaluate the effects of a skill-based program designed to prevent the development of problem behavior

If your child:

  • is between 3 and 6 years old
  • has been diagnosed with autism
  • does not engage in severe self-injurious behavior  

And if you are willing to participate in family-centered research that evaluates the effects of a parent-delivered teaching program, we invite you to contact our team of BCBAs led by Dr. Gregory Hanley, PhD., BCBA-D, LBA to obtain more information. 

Problem Behavior

Does your child engage in daily or more frequent episodes of problem behavior that negatively affect your quality of life? Would you like to learn how to respond to these problem behaviors and increase your child's communication, tolerance, compliance, and play skills? 

Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®) at the Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University may be able to help you. They are actively conducting child-centered research guided by these aims:

  • To develop functional assessment strategies to quickly and safely understand why a child is engaging in problem behavior
  • To enhance skill-based treatments so that generalized reductions in problem behavior are reliably achieved
  • To refine existing program for preventing the development of severe problem behavor

If your child:

  • is between 2.5 and 9 years old
  • regularly engages in severe problem behavior (daily episodes of meltdowns, aggression, property destruction, or noncompliance) that interferes with learning or socialization
  • does not have serious health conditions   
  • does not engage in severe self-injurious behavior that would require immediate medical attention

And if you are willing to participate in child-centered research that evaluates the effects of skill-based treatments on problem behaviors, we invite you to contact us.

Stereotypy

Does your child make repetitive movements or noises many times each day? Do these repetitive behaviors interfere with your child's learning or interactions with others?

Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®) at the Life Skills Clinic at Western New England University may be able to help you. They are actively conducting child-centered research guided by these aims:

  • To better understand how to help children manage their stereotypy (repetitive body movements or noises)
  • To develop skill-based treatments to teach children when it is and is not appropriate to engage in stereotypy

If your child: 

  • is between 2.5 and 18 years old
  • regularly engages repetitive behavior (e.g., hand flapping, body rocking, making repetitive movements with objects, making repetitive sounds or saying the same words over and over) that interferes with learning or socialization
  • does not have serious health conditions   
  • does not engage in dangerous behaviors (e.g., self-injury, physical aggression)
