Medellin on the Move beyond Narcos

Thursday, February 18, 2016 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
D'Amour Library, Room 319

Medellin on the Move beyond Narcos Speaker: Meri Clark, Associate Professor of History presents "Medellin on the Move beyond Narcos" The new Netflix series Narcos renewed attention to an outdated reputation of Medellin, Colombia as the most violent city in the world's most violent country. For decades, Medellin has faced off against the seemingly intractable realities that created such notoriety to regain its historical reputation as a "miracle of modernity." Indeed, the city has changed dramatically with massive growth in public works (metro, cable cars, roads, tunnels, and libraries) and the private sector (textiles, construction, mining, and flowers). Yet Colombians critique the sociopolitical and environmental impact of its urban innovations. Prof. Clark has studied and traveled in Colombia since 1993 (coincidentally, the year Pablo Escobar was killed). Come take a brief trip with her down Medellin's rugged road to a world beyond Narcos. This research was funded by a Faculty Summer Development Grant. Sponsored by The Department of History and D'Amour Library
