This course will cover foundational concepts in municipal land use and planning law. The course begins with zoning fundamentals, including zoning enabling acts, ordinances, variances, incentive zoning, transferable development rights and accessory uses and covers common federal, state and municipal litigation issues. The course will also cover takings, New Urbanism and smart growth; historic preservation; and aesthetic regulation. Students may not take both this course and LAW 624 Land Use Controls. This course satisfies 2 writing units.
