What is Bear Tracks?

BEAR TRACKS is an innovative program for first year students. It is intended to assist students in constructing a network of support that promotes self-confidence to assist students in building an identity in the Western New England University community while promoting confidence in the academic adventure. The program engages participants in one of two ways. Students can choose from the Outdoor Adventure Track or the Urban Plunge Track. Regardless of the track you choose, BEAR TRACKS creates a network of support before the beginning of classes at Western New England University, encouraging the confidence to succeed.

Outdoor Adventure Track

The Outdoor Adventure Track is a three day experience based at The Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA in the Berkshires. While there you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiences including canoeing, high ropes, and zip lining. Spend the day outdoors participating in these activities and stay in a cabin at night. And don't forget s'mores and stories around the campfire! This trip requires no prior experience.
Cost per student is $250 and includes meals and overnight accommodations.

Urban Plunge Track

The Urban Plunge Track provides new students with the opportunity to connect with classmates while engaging in service projects that will directly impact residents of Western Massachusetts. Led by upper-class students and staff from the Center for Civic Engagement, students will participate in a home-build with Habitat for Humanity, learn about food insecurity with the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, work with other local agencies in Springfield, as well as explore what the Springfield community has to offer. Students will live on campus in their assigned residence hall rooms and meals will be provided by both campus food service, as well as dinners in local prominent restaurants with a history of civic-mindedness. This track is limited to 12 participants.
Cost per student is $150 and includes meals and transportation.
