Alum Kevin Murphy L’78 awarded the Kent B. Smith Award

The Hampden County Bar Association welcomed more than 250 members of the local legal community to its Annual Judicial Dinner at the Delaney House in Holyoke on March 30, 2017. Attorney Kevin G. Murphy '78 was given the Kent B. Smith Award. The Kent B. Smith Award is given to an outstanding citizen of the law community of Hampden County and a dedicated contributor to the advancement of criminal law. Judge Smith was widely beloved by the bench and bar and was a loyal friend of the School of Law. In 1972 Smith was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court by Gov. Francis Sargent.He served on that court until 1981, when he was appointed an associate justice of the Appeals Court. He retired from the Massachusetts Appeals Court at the mandatory age of 70, but continued to serve as a recall judge on that court. Judge Smith died in October 2012 at age 85.
