The Alumni Golf Tournament: a Great Tradition Turns 40 and Continues to Provide Fun for All

Posted June 1, 2008

peasegroup.gif It was bright and breezy at the Oak Ridge Golf Club in Feeding Hills, MA for the 40th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament on May 23. It was also a day bristling with energy and camaraderie, as golfers took advantage of the opportunity to get together with fellow alumni and family.

The event raised nearly $7,000 for the Alumni Golf Scholarship. Highlights included a hole-in-one contest (no winners this year), a speech by last year’s scholarship recipient A.J. Pappas, exciting raffle prizes, and a silent auction that included Red Sox Green Monster seats and autographed sports memorabilia. View the photo album/slide show.

At the tournament dinner, Pappas presented the golfers an overview of his College experience, which will include traveling to Beijing for a group internship with other students in the College’s Sports Management Program. He will also attend the 2008 Summer Olympics. “Obviously, these valuable experiences wouldn’t have materialized without Western New England College,” he said. “I especially appreciate receiving the Alumni Golf Scholarship and I hope I will exceed your expectations.”

This year’s honorary tournament chair was Rod Pease ’77/G’83, pictured on the right with (L-R), his brother Craig Pease, Bill Norris G’83, and Susan Pease, Rod’s wife, who had the longest drive from the tee among the tournament's women players.

The winning foursome, with a score of 53, consisted of Corey Conway ’00, Jim Conway, Rob Bowtruczyk ’00, and Rich Bowtruczyk. Corey Conway also had the longest drive among the tournament's men players.

The runners-up, with a score of 54, were Gary Solomon ’86, Steve Metcalf ’86, Chris Crowell ’85, and Tom Cahill ’85. Placing third in the tournament, with a score of 57, were last year’s champions: James Winkler ’93, Max Winkler ’91, Max Winkler, Sr., and Robert Winkler.

The Alumni Golf Tournament has a storied past, with many foursomes turning the event into a family affair over the years. Indeed, George Moriarty ’56, who began playing in the tournament in 1969, hit the course again this year with his sons Richard Moriarty ’78/G’84 and Donald Moriarty ’98, along with his grandson Steve Moriarty, who is earning his MBA at the College. Kristina Oleksak, associate director of advancement events, acknowledged alumni who started and participated in the inaugural tournament in 1968: James Teixeira ’61, Bob Lucas ’65, Fran Johnson’59/G’61, and Evan Simpson ’61.

College President Anthony S. Caprio thanked the golfers for helping build such a rich tradition, and briefed them on the latest developments at the College, including a Pre-pharmacy program in 2009 and a professional program starting in 2011, which will involve the construction of a new academic building and a residence complex.
