Posted October 8, 2010
Western New England College School of Law will mark Public Interest Law Week with a series of events October 12 through October 14. All events are free and open to the public.
Public Interest Law Week kicks off Tuesday, October 12 at noon with National Labor Relations Board Chairman Wilma Liebman speaking on "More Rights, Fewer Jobs? Labor Law During Hard Times" in the Law Center Commons. Liebman will share her insights on the future of labor rights in today's challenging economy as part of the School of Law's Clason Speaker Series.
On Tuesday, October 12 at 4:30 p.m., the School of Law hosts a panel on how to secure a summer public interest job in Room 4. Law students will discuss public interest employment, including how they got their jobs, as well as funding sources.
On Wednesday, October 13 at 4:00 p.m., professors Harris Freeman and Bruce Miller will host a screening of the film "William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe" in Room 4. Filmmakers Emily and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, the late civil rights attorney Bill Kunstler. This powerful film recounts the historic public interest causes that Kunstler fought for and explores what drove him to risk public outrage and even the safety of his family in the name of justice.
Public Interest Law Week events conclude on Thursday, October 14 at noon with a Color of Law Roundtable Discussion Series event in the Blake Law Center Commons featuring Luis R. Vera, Legal Advisor to the League of United Latin American Citizens. A 1992 graduate of Western New England College School of Law, Vera is a nationally recognized civil rights attorney who has litigated major voting rights and immigration rights cases for nearly two decades. He is a participant in the litigation over Arizona's controversial legislation granting immigration enforcement authority to state and local police.
