Posted October 19, 2011

emery_top_15gifWestern New England Football Coach Keith Emery was named one of 15 finalists for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award for Division III on Monday, November 26. The Western New England community can help Emery make the top five by voting for him online, and fans can vote repeatedly (once a day) every day through Saturday, December 3. Emery will be included in another round of voting if he makes the top five.

Western New England enjoyed its best season ever with a 10-2 record this fall. Emery was voted the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Boyd Division Coach of the Year for the second straight season and won this season's New England Coach of the Year award. The Golden Bears finished first in the Boyd Division with a perfect 7-0 record and captured the program's first-ever NEFC Championship with a dramatic 20-13 overtime victory over Framingham State. Western New England then made its inaugural appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship dropping an opening round game at No. 13 Salisbury (MD).

The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award recognizes one college football coach from each division (I-FBS, I-FCS, II and III) by rewarding them for their sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence. Winners will receive $50,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, a $20,000 grant to each school’s alumni association, and the Coach of the Year trophy.

Emery's squad enjoyed a school-record nine-game winning streak this fall and finished second behind Amherst in the New England Division III Coaches Poll. Western New England also received votes for the first time in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Poll.
