Volleyball Author Joel Dearing to Speak February 28

Posted January 31, 2013

The Western New England University Center for International Sport Business (CISB) will host a talk by Joel Dearing, former women’s volleyball coach at Springfield College and author of The Untold Story of William G. Morgan, Inventor of Volleyball, on Thursday, February 28 at 12:30 p.m. in room 200 of the Center for the Sciences and Pharmacy. His talk is part of the CISB’s “People Who Inspire” speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.

Dearing is a widely-respected figure in the international volleyball community, conducting coaching and skills clinics in Aruba, Argentina, Bermuda, China, and Ireland. In his book, Dearing reveals the people and places that influenced Morgan during the time he invented Volleyball at the Holyoke YMCA.

During a 30-year career, Dearing compiled a 728-310 record for a .710 winning percentage, ranking him in the top ten in NCAA Division III women’s volleyball history. He also coached the Springfield College men’s volleyball team from 1990 to 1996 to a 130-52 record. Upon stepping down from his coaching duties after the 2010 season, Dearing accepted an appointment as a professor of physical education, where he teaches in the graduate athletics administration program.

Launched in 2011, the “People Who Inspire” series provides an engaging setting for students to personally interact with guest speakers. For more information, visit www.wne.edu/cisb.
