Communications

Communication major Laura Cafaro has found a balance between mentoring other students, participating in extracurricular activities, and excelling in academics. Her academic accomplishments include a 3.78 GPA, being named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists since freshman year. As a First Year Seminar Assistant and Academic Progress Monitor she has developed other students’ experiences by facilitating a path for them to make strides both academically and personally. Laura has also impacted others through volunteer work, which includes participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip to help rebuild the city of New Orleans. While in Louisiana she assisted in revitalizing Trinity Community Center, which provides education and lifestyle programs for children.

Laura broadened her experiences as an event planning intern at with Max’s Restaurant Group, where she coordinated benefit events for Baystate Heart & Vascular Center and Baystate Children’s Hospital. This real world experience taught her firsthand the importance of lending a helping hand to others for a greater outcome.

Always up for a new challenge Laura found herself as the first intern at MGM Springfield. Here she refined her public relations skills through editing press releases and participating in opening day press conferences.

While her hometown is just down the road in Feeding Hills, MA, Laura has made a point to broaden her horizons as a Global Scholar. She has completed study abroad programs in Sorrento, Italy and London, England and was able to visit eight other countries during schools breaks, which taught her how to immerse herself into unique cultures and learn how people in all corners of the world live. In the spring she will present a Global Scholars capstone project, sharing what she has learned through her cultural experiences and relating them back to her courses at the University. These involvements within other cultures have led her to declare a minor in International Studies.

Upon completing her degree in December, Laura plans to attend graduate school for a master’s degree in Higher Education.
