Law Alumni Endowed Scholarship

Law Alumni Association Leads Fundraising Effort for Student Aid

The Law Alumni Board is proud to announce that it is stepping up its efforts to engage with the student body at the School of Law. Alongside several events centered on student-alumni interaction, the Board has also voted to work to increase the available financial aid for current students. After a period of research and review, the Board selected the Law Alumni Endowed Scholarship as the beneficiary of its efforts. The Scholarship is awarded to returning law students who have demonstrated academic ability and have financial need, and the board has set a preliminary goal of increasing the endowment’s funding by $40,000.

“The mission of the Law Alumni Board of Directors is to engage and support not only our alumni community, but also our student community. We believe that an endowed scholarship designed to provide assistance to our current law students is critical to the furtherance of that mission and we are excited to throw our support into the project,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Shaune Sousa L’16.

Western New England University School of Law’s ability to attract and retain talented students is directly linked to the availability of scholarship funding. More than 75% of law students receive financial aid every year—through scholarships, grants, and loans—and most of the University’s current endowment is designated to provide scholarship support. Increasing the available scholarship aid is an important step toward expanding and preserving access to a Western New England School of Law education.

In January, the University announced its most ambitious fundraising campaign to date—the Campaign for Our Second Century. The comprehensive campaign seeks to raise $35 million overall, including increasing endowed student aid by $10.5 million.

Recent graduate Sarita Manigat L’18 spoke to the importance of scholarship aid in her educational experience. “My scholarship aid is the reason I was able to attend law school. Donor funded scholarships made all the difference in the world to me and I am grateful for my experiences at Western New England University. Scholarships provide opportunities for educational and career achievements and they open new doors for many people who are trying to make life changes.”

Each member of the Board has made his or her own commitment to the Law Alumni Endowed Scholarship, but more importantly, each is reaching out to their own personal and professional networks to encourage support and participation. “It is so exciting to see the board stepping up to serve as champions of philanthropy. They are showing that it is possible to prioritize philanthropy, even in the face of competing demands of work, family, and other obligations,” said Katie DeBeer, director of alumni engagement.
