Joseph Bernard '90 receives Kent B. Smith Award

Joseph D. Bernard '90 was awarded the Kent B. Smith award on March 28, 2019 for his outstanding work in the legal community. The award is given to an outstanding citizen of the law community and a dedicated contributor to the advancement of the practice of criminal law. Attorney Bernard was given this award due to his stellar work as lead defense counsel in the statewide breath test litigation in Commonwealth v. Ananias. Due to the revelations arising from this on-going case, prosecutors are no longer able to utilize breath tests in the prosecution of OUI cases in Massachusetts. As a result, Attorney Bernard was also named 2017 Lawyer of the Year by Lawyers Weekly, as well as being awarded the Trial Advocacy Award by the National College for DUI defense in July of 2018.
