Faculty Notification Letters
Faculty Notification Letters (FNLs) list the accommodations for which a student is eligible under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Such academic accommodations are provided in the spirit of equalizing opportunity rather than lowering standards or waiving requirements.
The Office of Student Disability Services (SDS) suggests that the instructor and student meet individually to discuss specific course requirements, identify areas that may be affected, develop a plan of action, and work out the logistics for providing the accommodations listed in the FNL. It's also important to follow up before and after exams to ensure that implementation is effective, if the student receives testing accommodations.
As stated above, FNLs list eligible accommodations, meaning that the student may or may not use all of their accommodations listed. The utilization of accommodations varies both by course and semester for each student. For example, though they are eligible for a note-taker, the student may choose to only request this accommodation in two of their five courses.
