"College Athletics: Who's in Charge"

The Western New England University's Center for International Sport Business (CISB) will host a talk by Senior Reporter for The Chronicle Eric Kelderman on Tuesday, September 13 at 12:30 p.m. in Sleith Hall, Lyman and Leslie Wood Auditorium on the University Campus. Kelderman's talk titled "College Athletics: Who's in Charge?" is part of the Center's "For the Love of the Games" speaker series. The event is free and open to the public.

Recent and pending legal challenges to the NCAA's governance of intercollegiate athletics has upended college sport and resulted in significant change to the management and control of intercollegiate sport programs at colleges and universities across the country. Mr. Kelderman will be discussing a host of issues that continue to arise related to policy shift, student-athlete experience, and state and federal interest in the governance of this multibillion-dollar industry.

Kelderman has been a reporter at The Chronicle since 2008, covering a wide range of subjects, including money and accountability in higher education, state policy, accreditation, and legal affairs. He has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland at College Park, a master's degree in music theory and composition from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and a bachelor's degree in music from Luther College, in Decorah, Iowa. Mr. Kelderman's recent work includes feature articles on changing governance and policy in the NCAA and effects on student-athletes and intercollegiate athletics programs.

The "For the Love of the Games Distinguished Speaker Series" is a platform for leading personalities in the world of sport to discuss contemporary issues related to the business of sport. The CISB launched the Speaker Series in 2007 as part of its Distinguished Visitor Program, with World Anti-Doping Agency chair and International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound.

This event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Western New England University Alumni Association. For more information, contact Jim Masteralexis (James.Masteralexis@wne.edu), Chair of the Western New England University Sport Management Program.
