The Department of Public Safety provides a full range of safety and crime prevention services, including:
- 24-hour police patrols on foot, mountain bikes, and in cruisers;
- 57 surveillance cameras throughout campus;
- Fire and environmental safety efforts;
- 33 Emergency phones throughout campus;
- Medical first responders and six emergency medical technicians;
The Department also facilitates educational programs on a number of topics, including alcohol and drug use, personal safety, rape aggression defense, and fire safety.
University Police is staffed with personnel, trained and qualified by the Massachusetts State Police, including a director, two lieutenants, four sergeants, eleven police officers, and five emergency dispatchers. Each officer is certified under Massachusetts General Law and has full police powers. The Department also employs security, student patrol, and administrative support staff, all working cooperatively to enhance the quality of life at Western New England University.
Stopping crime before it occurs is the primary concern of the Department of Public Safety. The Department offers free Security Escorts for students who need to walk alone on campus late at night, self-defense training through the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) program, and a wide variety of educational resources.
Building Access and Parking
Photo ID/Access Cards
The access cards issued to every member of the University community also double as their official Western New England identification card. These cards are coded to provide access to residence halls or office and academic buildings, and can be used by student workers to swipe in and out of their work sites to log their time cards.
Key and Lock Services
Professional locksmiths oversee the installation and assignment of all the locks and keys on campus. We use a patented key system that isn't available to the public. This increases security and reduces the chance that unauthorized duplicate keys will be made.
Parking and Traffic
Students and employees of the University must have visible parking decals on their cars to access campus parking. The Department of Public Safety issues parking decals and provides details on parking and traffic policies on campus.
